KS2 Spelling
Children are given a list of spellings as part of their English lessons and learn spelling patterns and rules. They will be given opportunities when writing, to use these words. Teachers will check that the children are correctly spelling these key words and spelling patterns within their writing.
The children do not do a weekly spelling test; instead, they complete
Weekly homework investigations. There will be a list of words each week that they will have been working on. In the book there will be a choice of activities to investigate and play with the spelling patterns.
Each week, the homework books will be handed in as usual, so your child’s teacher can check homework is being completed.
Parents can also help your child with spelling by playing games and activities such as Scrabble and Boggle it ensures pupils regularly use words and develop knowledge of spelling patterns and rules in a way that is relevant and fun.
There are many spelling apps available which will help to make learning words more fun, some good free ones are:
Doodlespell
Spelling Hero Game ( free on Android)
Word Search Ultimate
We will also use ‘Spelling Shed’ as part of homework, children will practise their spellings in the form of games.
Teachers will continue to assess spelling each term based on the spelling patterns learned.
